Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Reiki

Got questions? I’m here to help.

It’s natural to have questions before trying Reiki, especially if it’s your first time experiencing energy work. My aim is to create a safe, calming space where you can explore what Reiki is, how it works, and what you might feel during a session. Many people come to Reiki seeking relaxation, balance, or gentle support through life’s changes. Before you book, I’ve answered some of the most common questions below so you can feel informed and at ease.

What exactly is Reiki?

Reiki is a holistic healing technique that originates from Japan. It involves the practitioner channeling universal energy (also known as "chi" or "ki") into the recipient's body, promoting relaxation, balance, and overall well-being. It's a popular choice for those seeking a natural, non-invasive way to enhance their physical and emotional health.

Why should I consider a Reiki session?

What can I expect during a Reiki session?

My Reiki sessions are approximately 90 minutes and can be experienced either in-person in London or virtually from anywhere in the world. Whether you join me physically or connect across distance, each session is held with care, intention, and presence.

Before the Reiki session

  • We will begin with a short conversation—either in person or online—where I’ll ask a few basic questions about your current health, emotional state, and what has brought you to Reiki at this time. I’ll also explain how the session will unfold and answer any questions you may have.

  • For both in-person and distance sessions, I recommend:

    • Wearing comfortable clothing

    • Avoiding heavy meals or stimulants like caffeine beforehand

    • Taking a few minutes before we begin to settle your energy, especially if you’re coming into the space physically

  • If attending in-person, you’re welcome to arrive a few minutes early to relax and become familiar with the environment

During the Reiki session

  • For in-person Reiki, you’ll lie down fully clothed on a comfortable Reiki table. We’ll begin with some grounding breathwork before I begin placing my hands gently and respectfully on or just above areas such as your head, shoulders, chest, abdomen, and limbs. I typically start at the crown and work down and around the body, though I may be intuitively drawn to areas that need additional attention.

  • For distance Reiki, you’ll set yourself up in a quiet, restful space of your choosing, such as a bed, a sofa, or a meditation spot. We’ll begin the same way: with breathing to ground, followed by the Reiki energy transmission. While I won’t be physically present, many clients still report sensations like warmth, tingling, emotional release, or visual imagery. The healing intelligence of Reiki flows where it is needed, regardless of location.

  • The intention in both formats is to promote relaxation, emotional harmony, and energetic alignment. Reiki is a non-sexual, deeply respectful practice where your boundaries and comfort are always honored.

After the Reiki session

  • Following the session, we’ll take a few minutes to reflect and share. Whether you’re in person (over a calming herbal tea) or connecting virtually, this time is for you to process anything you felt, saw, or experienced.

  • You may feel calm, light, energized, emotional and/or tired as your body and spirit integrate the energy. This is all part of the healing.

  • I recommend:

    • Drinking plenty of water

    • Taking it easy for the rest of the day

    • Avoiding strenuous activity or overstimulation

  • Reiki continues to work after the session ends, so be gentle with yourself.

Will I notice the benefits of a Reiki session right away?

This will vary from each person. While many people experience an immediate sense of relaxation and well-being after a Reiki session, the cumulative effects of Reiki are often more noticeable over time. Regular sessions can lead to a deeper sense of balance, resilience, and overall improved health.

Can Reiki be done remotely, for example over a video call?

Technically, yes. Reiki doesn’t require physical touch or even real-time contact to be effective, as it can be sent across any distance. In fact, I’ve had beautiful success working with clients through long-distance Reiki sessions, often held over a call.

That said, I also love offering Reiki as a memorable, embodied experience, and I’ve found that in-person sessions tend to support this most naturally. At this time, I’m currently seeing clients in or around the London area, either at my space or by arrangement.

Whether we meet in person or connect remotely, your session will be held with full presence, respect, and intention. Reiki does not discriminate — it meets you exactly where you are.

What is your lineage to Reiki?

My journey into the profound world of Reiki began in an unexpected moment while I was finalizing grade reports at the school where I worked as a teacher and principal in Spain. One day, as I was immersed in my tasks, the word 'Reiki' unexpectedly resonated in my mind. Despite knowing very little about it, I felt a compelling urge to explore this mysterious call. I immediately went online, and within minutes, I discovered Jordi Ibern, who would later become my Reiki Master. Intrigued, I booked a session that very week. The experience was transformative; after my session, it was unmistakably clear that Reiki was calling me. I was drawn deeply to the practice and knew without a doubt that I needed to pursue training. I began my formal Reiki education in Barcelona, Spain, in October 2016, starting with Usui Reiki I and II, and by December 2017, I had become a Reiki Master.

My Reiki lineage is as follows:

Mikaousui.jpg

Mikao Usui was the founder of Reiki, a spiritual practice developed in the early 20th century in Japan. Known for his deep spiritual insights and healing abilities, Usui developed Reiki after a profound mystical experience in 1922 on Mount Kurama. He dedicated his life to the practice and teaching of this healing technique, emphasizing self-improvement and spiritual enlightenment. Usui’s teachings have inspired countless practitioners worldwide, making Reiki a globally recognized form of energy healing.

A disciple of Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi was instrumental in spreading Reiki beyond its traditional roots. A retired naval officer, Hayashi simplified and systematized the healing techniques to make them more accessible and teachable. His contributions to Reiki include the development of the hand position system used in treatments today. He also played a key role in transitioning Reiki from a mystical private practice to a public healing art, laying the groundwork for its international expansion.

Hawayo Takata was crucial in introducing Reiki to the Western world. Born in Hawaii to Japanese immigrant parents, she discovered Reiki in Japan while seeking treatment for her health issues. After profound healing, she studied under Chujiro Hayashi, becoming one of the first female and foreign Reiki Masters. Takata dedicated her life to teaching and practicing Reiki, establishing numerous clinics and training 22 Reiki Masters, ensuring the practice's spread and preservation outside of Japan.

Barbara W. Ray was as a significant figure in bringing Reiki to the Western world. She developed the "The Radiance Technique" version of Reiki after being trained in the traditional Japanese methods. Her approach emphasized the integration of Reiki into everyday life, promoting healing and wellness on multiple levels. Ray authored several books on Reiki, further educating the public and deepening the practice’s reach and understanding globally.
